Jessica WardBA (Hons), NPQH
Principal

Jessica is delighted to have been appointed as the new Principal at Elmhurst School for Dance, and is looking forward to working with all staff and students to help shape the next generation of classical ballet dancers.

Born in Shoreham by Sea, Sussex , Jessica started dancing at the early age of two; she continued studying ballet and other dance forms throughout her school years. In 1998 Jessica was awarded a BA honours degree in Dance Theatre at the Laban Centre, now Trinity Laban in London. In 1999 she danced with Laban’s resident company Transitions, for which she taught and performed a mixed bill of repertoire on tour across the UK and the USA. Through her Transitions experience she developed a love of teaching and working with young people. She also gained a Post Graduate Diploma in Dance Performance. In 2000, she instigated the formation of a Dance Department at Islington Green School, North London. Dance became a high-profile subject within the school, with GCSE Dance and BTEC Performing Arts well subscribed to, as well as a 40-strong boys' dance company. Alongside managing the Dance Curriculum Jessica took on the Pastoral Role of Head of Year which she enjoyed for five years.

Jessica has enthusiasm and a proven ability to improve the outcomes for young people. She has been a Senior Leader in three London Secondary Schools, and during this time achieved her National Professional Qualification for Head Teachers (NPQH). Since 2007 Jessica has held senior appointments for Edison Learning, an International School Improvement Company, deployed at Turin Grove Secondary School in Enfield. A unique opportunity as Edison Learning secured the first whole school management contract of its kind in the UK. In 2007 Ofsted described her as a ‘highly effective leader’.

Most recently Jessica has run workshops for trainee head teachers with the National College of School Leadership and has created a number of television programmes for Teachers TV.
