The costume designs
Romany Wood is a specially commissioned piece, featuring dancers from Elmhurst, and created by choreographer Kit Holder and designer Helen Fownes-Davies.
Helen describes the creative process as follows: 'The costume designs are inspired directly from Beshlie's illustrations and from the original book Romany Wood. Kit, the choreographer, and I both decided to keep as much of the charm and authenticity in the costuming as possible. The biggest challenge is to make sure they are transformed into costumes that allow movement for dance and we debated how far we should keep the animalistic qualities of each character. Rather than full masks and tails we opted for simple suggestive elements like oversized prints and buttons to make each character feel smaller and keep just the ears attached to the main characters headdresses. The richness of colours and floral motifs running through all the costumes will hopefully keep close to Beshlie's iconic theme with a hint of European folk dress added in too.'
