Born in Surrey, Susan Lucas studied the Cecchetti method with Gillian Dawson before winning the Cyril Beaumont Scholarship to the Royal Ballet School. After dancing Swanilda at the school’s annual Royal Opera House performance, she graduated to Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet.
During her 21-year career with SWRB
(which relocated to become Birmingham Royal Ballet in 1990), Susan worked her way through the ranks of the company dancing Corps de Ballet, Soloist and Principal roles. Her repertory included the principal female roles in The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, La Fille mal gardée, Coppélia, The Dream, Petrushka, Pineapple Poll, Symphonic Variations and The Two Pigeons, alongside many soloist roles. She created roles in ballets by David Bintley, Kenneth
MacMillan, Michael Corder and Grahame Lustig, and worked with Ninette de Valois, Frederick Ashton, Anthony Dowell, Antoinette Sibley, Desmond Kelly and Monica Mason.
Susan completed her teacher training at the Royal Ballet School (Professional Dancer’s Teachers’ course), graduating with Distinction. She has been teaching for Elmhurst since the school moved to Birmingham in 2004. Her teaching experience is wide-ranging and includes the Cecchetti Society Scholarship and
Associate programme, Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Department for Learning, DanceXchange, West Midlands Youth Ballet, Solihull Ballet School, Kokuma Dance Company, Bare Bones Dance Company, Wolverhampton University and Birmingham University. She has adjudicated many competitions and is a qualified Pilates teacher.
